Why do so many soldiers turn to God in times of stress? This report insinuates that it is because living so close to death clouds a person’s judgment and makes one reach for irrational crutches. I would argue that it is just the opposite – that a realization of mortality clarifies the mind, strips away the shallowness of normal pursuits and brings the things that are really important in life to the forefront.
